History of the Château des Bachelards

The Château des Bachelards owes its existence to the Benedictine monks. Around 1100, the monks of the abbey of Cluny founded the abbey of Arpayé and chose to plant a vineyard in the place called Les Bachelards. They draw the enclosure that still exists today, with the 17th century house and the outbuildings of the abbey unfortunately destroyed during the Revolution.

It was then a family of notables from the region that became owners of the Château des Bachelards and remained so from 1793 to 2007! During this long period, the Château is classified among the best estates in the region, thanks to its remarkable terroirs, excellently located and well exposed.

At the start of 2014, Alexandra de Vazeilles, a graduate in viticulture and oenology, acquired the Château des Bachelards and breathed new life into it!

Travellers' review - Château des Bachelards

  • A beautiful day

At Domaine de la Madone, our first stop was a highly instructive one, and the tasting took place in optimal conditions. Well received and well guided, we would perhaps have liked to have had someone closer to the work of the vine and the making of the wines. A very warm welcome at the restaurant, with an impeccable menu and superb panoramic views over the vineyards. Note that the nearby Chapelle de la Madone can be reached on foot from the restaurant in about ten minutes... a must. Château des Bachelards was the highlight of the day, with its AB and Demeter wines - a little expensive for our budget, alas. The guided tour of the grounds and cellars was the most exciting and instructive part of the day. At Steeve Charvet's, Orane made us feel very welcome, and we learned a lot, especially about how to taste these excellent vintages. This discovery of the Beaujolais vineyards will remain a beautiful memory: a superb gift!

  • Discover the wines of Château des Bachelards

The vineyard covers 12 hectares, including 6 hectares in Fleurie, all in one piece around the castle, all surrounded by a wall. The estate also includes a few hectares in Saint-Amour and Moulin-à-Vent, with a large majority of very old vines. The owner, Alexandra de Vazeilles, also vinifies and matures Pouilly-Vinzelles for her Chardonnay on limestone which produces tight and chiseled wines.

A pioneer of organic and biodynamic agriculture in Fleurie, Moulin-à-Vent and Saint-Amour, the Château des Bachelards is doubly certified organic and biodynamic by Demeter.

The estate's wines are also regularly praised by international critics (Falstaff, Bill Nanson, Vinous, Blind Tasting) and French (Green Guide of the Best Wines of France from RVF with a score of 18/20, awarded by Olivier Poussier, Meilleur Sommelier of the World).
